Art Guild

Did you know we have an Art Guild in Semmes?

Mary Ellen Ward Art Guild was founded in 2010 to promote art and to provide an opportunity for local artists to come together with like-minded people. It is named for a beloved teacher who taught at Wilmer School, Semmes High School, MGM and Faith Academy. Her love affair with art began in 1948 and continued until her death in 1998. She is remembered for her devotion and encouragement to her students.

The Art Guild Membership is open to all adults interested in Art. Monthly meetings take place on the first Wednesday of the Month at the Semmes Heritage Park at 12:00 P.M.

A Free Adult Art Class is sponsored by the art guild and meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month in the community room at the Library.

Semmes has an Art Gallery The Semmesonian, located in the Semmes Municipal Library, founded by Mary Rodning, a well known artist living in Semmes. The Semmesonian provides an opportunity for artists to show their work. Lori Noeland a guild member is the volunteer curator.

Semmes Camellia Maids

The Semmes Camellia Maids are sponsored by the local Semmes organization that maintains Heritage Park, The Alumni and Friends of Semmes School. The Court of Camellia Maids represent the community as good will ambassadors for our rich history, our culture and our “down home” southern hospitality. The maids will participate in activities throughout the year at Semmes Heritage Park and in the Semmes community. These events will include the Camellia Festival where the Court will be featured, Old-Fashioned Christmas, Heritage day and other special City of Semmes sponsored events.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates for these coveted Camellia Maid opportunities will be young women in middle and high school in the sixth through 11th grades. They can be students in private, parochial or public schools or they can be homeschooled students, but they must be Semmes residents. Camellia maids will serve for a term of one year and may enter the contest again, so long as they are in grades 6-11.

Because the maids will interact closely with the public, they must be outgoing, poised and articulate, possessing excellent communication skills. They must also have a “passion” for history.

Additional Details

A Heritage Park Coordinator for the Camellia Maids will schedule all activities. The Maids will be responsible for the purchase of their costumes and for transportation to all activities.

Detailed requirements to become a Camellia Maid candidate are listed on the application which can be downloaded below. Additional questions can be directed to Jeanette Byrd at (251) 649-1647 or Alice Baker at (251) 753-3423.

Semmes Senior Center

The Blackwell-Batson Estate, a 4,000 square foot home on four wooded acres is the home of the Semmes Senior Center. Located at 9635 Moffett Road, the Senior Center opened in 2013 and accommodates the recreational needs of the senior citizens of Semmes. Seniors, ages 62 and above are encouraged to enjoy the amenities to include an exercise room, a billiards room, a computer room, and a multi-purpose room for arts, crafts and games.

The Semmes Senior Center Project as it was known, was funded largely by Community Block Grant Funds (CDBG) obtained by the Mobile County Commission spearheaded by our County Representative, Connie Hudson and continues to operate as a result of the contributions from these same funds annually. The Semmes Woman’s Club also contributed to this project by raising funds during development and currently manages and operates the Senior Center through volunteers. The City of Semmes provided sponsorship donations during development for different rooms in the estate. An appropriation is also sought by the Woman’s Club from the City of Semmes annually. This annual contribution by the City of Semmes totals around $10,000 per year.

The Semmes Senior Center provides recreational options to Semmes seniors that will keep them active and involved in their later years and it is a community project strongly supported by our city government.

Interested seniors, age 62 or older are encouraged to stop by the Semmes Senior Center to fill out membership applications. The annual dues are $40.
